Human-Scale Tools for a Sustainable World

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by admin

Peak Moment 67: At Smith and Speed Mercantile on Orcas Island, hand tools line the walls and tables along with organic wool comforters and non-toxic paints. It’s an extension of Kathleen Smith and Errol Speed’s off-grid homestead where they work at “the speed of living,” using hand tools that reconnect them to the earth.

What are the best and worst power tool brands available?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

Maybe a like a top ten(Or More) from best to worst. Brands like Dewalt, Porter Cable, Skil, Craftsmen, Black and Decker, etc.

I am looking for mainly hand held tools such as saws, drills, etc.

Maybe even your additional thoughts on each one too.

We sell contractors and a lot of other tradesman tools. We like DeWalt for a few reasons. Their tools are not overdesigned. Their tools are basic yellow and black with no wild grooves and colors in them.
The are engineered by the best in the industry. Sometimes slower to come out with new flashy models because the models they have out went through a lot of testing and modifications before their final production started – hence they don’t change them much. DeWalt also has a primary responsiblility to cordless tool buyers to not change batteries/chargers every 6 months. Milwaukee has so many different batteries and chargers that we almost refuse to try to stock them.
Milwaukee does have the #1 rated Portaband saw. Bosch has the top Rotary Hammers and demolition hammers, DeWalt has the best cordless lineup, mitre saws and their new Portaband is as good as milwaukee it just has not caught on as much.
Black and Decker (who now owns DeWalt,Delta,Porter Cable) bought the DeWalt name and made it their heavy duty line. DeWalt also makes compact cordless tools mainly for the big box stores (except menards). DeWalt and Menards had a big falling out several years ago – so you won’t see any DeWalt at Menards- unless they get it through a distributor. Craftsman has other people make their tools, Black and Decker used to make the craftsman electric impact, sawzall. Emerson Electric makes their other power tools.
The problem with sears is they have no customer support for quick parts and repairs.
Watch out for these no-name brands that the big box stores have, you cannot get parts for them. Remember the name Pro-Tech? CNC?Even popular names like Coleman, Panasonic,Hitachi,Ryobi – Parts are forever trying to get. We quit working on Ryobi tools because customers would get irate at us waiting on parts for 4-5 months.
We like DeWalt,Milwaukee,Bosch,Porter Cable. That’s my 2 cents worth.

What would you consider the basic tools needed to do most simple woodworking projects?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

I know I’m asking to hear alot of common sense stuff but I’m trying to make a list of stuff my mom needs to bring me on her next trip up here. You name it and I bet it’s something found in my dads garage out back. So, yeah, all suggestions are welcome. Thanx!

Off the top of our heads, here’s simple start-up tool kit:

- Tape measure
- Steel ruler
- Some type of square – such as a try-square or combination square
- Hand saws – if possible, one with a back, one without and a coping saw
- Drill and drill bits
- Hammer and nail-set
- Clamps – as many as possible
- Wood glue
- Rasps and files
- Wood chisels
- Bench plane and/or block plane
- A place to work – a sturdy bench with a vise is best, but fold-up sawhorses and a piece of plywood will do in a pinch.

This is assuming you won’t have access to expensive, heavy woodworking machinery. Still, you can make an endless variety of great stuff with just these few "basics".

A woodworking book or two, and/or a little instruction to help you get started could make things much easier, if you don’t have a lot of experience.

What tools would you suggest for a beginner at sculpting in limestone?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

I want to know what basic tools I need and a brief description of what they are for. I have two small wood chisels but I would like a better range of tools to make it a little easier.
Thanks mike1942f and tigris. Both answers were very helpful.

You will destroy the wood chisels if you use them on stone – you need hard "cold" chisels of various shapes made specifically for the purpose along with various weight hammers and grind stones for sharpening and reshaping your tools. Here is a brief tutorial http://www.stonecarver.com/carvtool.html
and a source http://www.miconproducts.com/wedges.html
