part II – ABC of Hand Tools [1946]

Although General Motors is a struggling company now and Disney is thriving, ’twas not always so. Once, Disney was the hardscrabble organization and GM was sitting on top of the world. That was the dynamic that existed when the car company commissioned the Mouse House to produce an instructional cartoon that would show people how to use hand tools safely. Below are screen captures from the cartoon, examples of Primitive Pete’s appearance in print, and a picture of Walt Disney checking out the progress of “Fantasia” with “Hand Tools” director Bill Roberts and maestro Leopold Stokowski.

    Thanks for posting this! They were still showing this to kids in the 70s. Too bad shop classes are now all but extinct and we’re raising a generation that doesn’t know how to actually DO anything.
