OTC Tool Guy Pegisys Direct – Hit Technician 2001 Volkswagen Beetle 1.9 Ltr. Diesel Engine

Posted on July 10th, 2010 by admin

2001 Volkswagen Beetle 1.9L

Customer Complaint = Vehicle does not accelerate well, seems to be underpowered.

Procedure:

When a 1.9L TDI diesel engine exhibits a lack or power and/or poor acceleration, proceed as follows:

1. Check the intake manifold for excessive carbon buildup and clean as necessary. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to gain access and inspect the passages.

2. Using a full function factory compatible scan tool, verify Mass Airflow (MAF) readings as follows:
NOTE: The following tests must be performed on a warm engine.

3. Start and idle the vehicle. Enter Engine Address Word 01, Function 08 Read Measuring Blocks and Display Group 003.

4. Observe the 2nd (air mass drawn in specified) and 3rd (air mass drawn in actual) display fields. Both fields should match (typical idle range is 230-370 mg/H).

5. Enter Engine Address Word 01, Function 08 Read Measuring Blocks and Display Group 010. Observe the first (air mass drawn in) 3rd (Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)-Boost) and 4th (throttle position) display fields.

6. Perform a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) acceleration from 35 MPH in 3rd gear and record the displayed values in fields 1 and 3 at 3,000 RPM and display field 4 showing 100% throttle. Field 1 should show in excess of 810 mg/H and field 3 should show between 1,700 to 2,080 mbar of available boost (optimum readings are 1,850 to 1,950 mbar).

7. Lower than normal MAF readings indicate a potential plugged intake or a faulty MAF.

Potential Causes:

Carbon Fouled Intake Manifold
Defective Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

Confirmed Fix:

6 – Intake Manifold
2 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Passages
2 – Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

NEW Milwaukee M18 Cordless Power Tool Range

Posted on July 10th, 2010 by admin

Milwaukee’s new M18 System of Lithium-Ion powered cordless tools will receive high praise from the professional tradesmen who will appreciate the excellent performance they have come to expect from the Milwaukee Brand. Consisting of 8 products; drill driver, combi, impact driver, reciprocation saw, circular saw, jigsaw, grinder and torch, this new comprensive range is promised to be just the start of an enviable family of tools. The percussion combi drill is the backbone of the range and provides extremely high performance from a highly durable & compact exterior. The range also includes a ΒΌ hex impact driver that creates up to 158Nm of torque from an equally compact unit and a extremely compact but powerful drill driver. The cutting side of the range consists of a circular saw which by utilizing a combination of magnesium and aluminium provides accuracy and power at low weight, a top handled jigsaw which has all the features that you would expect and a reciprocating saw which uses many of Milwaukee patented features that make its corded range so successful. Last of all is the grinder, similar in features to the already proven 28v model, its light weight and has surprising levels of torque.

Having taken the leading initiative on power management through working hand-in-hand with construction workers and their employers, Milwaukee have combined this knowledge with their sophisticated and patented technology, ensuring there isn’t another cordless tool on the market that compares.

When it comes to providing maximum cordless power on the jobsite, nothing comes close to the lithium-ion batteries and nothing is better than Milwaukees 18V high capacity battery. These batteries feature the revolutionary Digital Power Management System which delivers best in class Power, Performance and Durability. Additional features include 50% longer run time 35% lighter when compared with a Nicd battery. Individual cell monitoring system maintains cell integrity coupled with overload/ discharge protection which monitors cell temperature and prevents damage from excessive abuse or damage from full discharge.

Tested according to a stringent certified programme before leaving the factory and warranted to be Nothing-But-Heavy-Duty qualified, Milwaukee Electric Tools are now offered with extended warranty conditions to 3 years at no cost*.

Alligator Type Pneumatic Squeezer

Posted on July 10th, 2010 by admin

In aircraft construction or repair work, I find the “alligator” type pneumatic squeezer to be significantly more efficient than the far more common “C” type pneumatic squeezer. Although comparitively more costly, it is also more ergonomic and able to reach structural areas of an aircraft a “C” type squeezer simply cannot access. For example, a clip or bracket can be easily retrofitted and riveted to an existing floor stiffener…an area that would be impossible for a “C” type squeezer to access. This tandem cylinder examble is strong enough to squeeze heavy AD6 rivets and as the video demonstrates, can make make very short work of most dimpling operations.
