Options on cordless impact wrench, Hitachi vs Chicago Pneumatic?

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin

I need some advice on A cordless impact wrench I plan to buy. A friend of mine is hard up for cash right now, and selling off some tools. Im going to buy a cordless impact wrench from him. I just unsure witch one. He has two for sale, Ive only used air tools. Ive never used a cordless impact but I like the idea. Since ive never used them, I dont know what brand is good or better then the other. So witch one would you buy???

Hitachi WR12DMR 12v 1/2" impact with two battarys and case: $80 (USED) OR
Chicago Pneumatic CP8740 1/2" Drive 14.4 V Impact $150 (almost new)

Im sure the chicago is better because it is larger, But is it worth twice as much?
And do cordless impacts realy work? Being big on compressed air, I just dont see a little battary impact having any power to it. But if it did, That would be nice!

Thanks!

Please note: Im only buying one because a friend needs christmas money, And loaning money is the fastest way to loose a friend. Im not interested in any other brands or models of cordless impact wrench’s If I dont buy one from him, I will prob never buy one.
Thanks guys! Ive pretty much got my answer. I honestly did not think anything is made in america anymore. Thats all I need to know! I will buy the CP and play around with it. If I do anywork that is important I will use air like I aways do. I figure it will come in handy on long bolts, that are to loose to use air, But to long to use a wrench. And worst case Ebay will fix everything!

Thanks for all your help!

The CP impact not only costs more but is more power full, reliable and will last twice as long as the Hitachi.
Go with the proven winner, buy American.

The 14.4V should have a bit more power.

Personally I don’t really like electric impact wrenches. They are nowhere near as powerful as compressed air tools. The batteries wear out, and don’t hold a charge for very long.

battery impact wrenches are nice for running down bolts before tightening with a torque wrench.
In my experience they just don’t have the power of a traditional impact gun. you’ll be disappointed the first time you try to bust a lug nut loose with one.

portability is really the only advantage.

    HI
If a tire was put on with an air gun then the cordless is never going to loosen it..
I personally have never had any luck with an Electric or cordless impack wrench..
    good luck

cp is better, newer, higher voltage, american made, two issues here, how often do you use an impact and would it be worth the difference in cost ,i would guess no,but it’s your money. i had a goodyear ,and in commercial use i’d take the air drive hands down.

I guess it just depends on how much you want to give him for Christmas. If you have air impacts you probably won’t use the electric one. They don’t have much power and no stamina when it comes to the batteries.
