What kind of brand of power tools should one buy?

Posted on October 28th, 2010 by admin

I would like to start doing some DIY work at home.

Buying power tools these days is like finding a needle in a haystack. There are lots of brands to choose from, but what brand offer the best value for money and the best service?

What would people prefer to buy:
1. Ridgid Tools
2. Makita
3. De Walt
4. Or something else

All the brands mentioned are very good quality tools. I have purchased a lot of brands and the one one I prefer will definitely be Ridgid Tools. Ridgid is by far the best quality for the best price. Their service is excellent and have a lifetime service agreement. I am sure you will get value for money from Ridgid.

If you would like to purchase Ridgid Tools, you should visit <a href="http://www.ridgidtools.net">RidgidTools.net</a>. They have the best prices by far and a wide variety.

Some brands of tool you will find are just that, “brands”. Typically manufactured in the far-east and then “branded” for the eventual retailer. This also explains why you can find exactly the same tool available under several different “brands” where the only difference is the label, and the colour of the plastic.

With badged tools of this type, getting spares or any kind of after sales service can be difficult or impossible.de wait

This is really one place where you get what you pay for. If you want to have the item for a long time and for it to do what it’s supposed to, you’re going to have to buy pretty good quality.

Our favorite for sanders is Dewalt. I wish they made a little sander for tight places but you’re stuck with the Black and Decker mouse. They last a couple years and they’re done. Hubby is hard on his sanders; he refinishes furniture as a hobby.

He’s in love with his Black & Decker Firestorm set. It’s got a 18 volt cordless drill, a reciprocating saw and a little circular saw that all run off the same batteries. But that set is a good 6-7 years old; we just bought some additional batteries to replace the original ones = won’t hold a charge any more. I can’t say there is the same level of quality in the Black & Decker stuff; it looks ok but the quality feel isn’t there.

He’s got a lot of different brands of hand tools; screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, wrenches and the like. Some of it was decided by what sizes and types he needed. But I do notice that the two brands he goes for the most are Craftsman and Kobalt (Lowe’s) when he reaches for a screwdriver.

His miter saw is a Dewalt and he absolutely is nuts about that thing. I’ve even used it and it’s pretty awesome. And I just got him a set of drill bits that are Dewalt and he’s pretty impressed with those.

There is a big range of quality in all makes. I go for the cheapest in the professional range of any make. The professional tools are well made and last longer, and they are not much more expensive than the top of the range amateur tools. One good professional drill will outlast three amateur cheapies. Look in the trade magazines for adverts of professional tools.

my opinion is that for the most part, DeWalt tools are currently overpriced. also, it depends on the specific tool one is looking to purchase. I HAVE bought some DeWalt stuff, but no more. Milwaukee seems to now offer more value.

Milwalkee is best but Ridgid is also a good value for the money. Dewalt is the worst as the batteries constantly go bad!

Everyone has their favorites, mine are Dewalt which btw are made by Black and Decker which I can’t stand. DeWalt is their top of the line product.
Makita is also good but I am not as impressed with their product.
Skil. Milwaukee, and BOSCH are all very good as well, even Hitachi has started to make some good tools. It also depends on what you want to spend.

I do not recommend Rigid, Craftsman or Black and Decker

    This is what I use

    Cordless drills: DeWalt
Wormdrive Circular saw: Skil (Also recommend Bousch)
Nail Guns: Porter Cable, Bostich, Paslode and Synco
    SawsAll: Porter Cable
Air Compressor: Campbell Housfeld or Emglo
Also I’m never with out mt RotoZip!
    Miter Saw: DeWalt
    Table Saw: Ryobi

    Good luck, have fun shopping

    DeWALT is our preference. Why?
DeWALT Tools are designed for the Professional and serious DIY people.
DeWalt tools have been engineered to avoid the problem that Milwaukee is now putting their loyal customers through. Instead of designing the new tools them come out with so the older style batteries can fit them – they pretty much started over with each newer model. Result = Milwaukee now has about 3 different styles of batteries that will not interchange + that means the chargers won’t either. Pretty stupid I think.
DeWALT did their homework . The new Lithium Ion batteries will fit in the Ni-Cad cordless line. The only difference is the older chargers won’t charge the newer Lithium Ion batteries, but the new chargers will charge the older Ni-Cad batteries.
Rigid that home depot sells is totally an imported tool line. Makita once was a widely
distributed tool line – not any more. Parts are hard to get with a lead time of 1 month or more most of the time. Hitachi is the same. Ryobi pretty much has no parts support. Most of the cheaper tool lines are throw away tools – with terrible parts/service support. Milwaukee was not to long ago bought out by a big overseas company.
DeWALT batteries have a date code stamped on the underside. The first four numbers are the year the batteries were made. followed by the week of the year. The XRP batteries (yellow top) have a 2 year warranty. Date code example 200949.
This means this battery was made in 2009, the 49th week. Any DeWALT battery that is under-performing or will not hold a charge, should be returned to a service center for testing and possibly replaced under warranty. Milwaukee batteries have to be returned to a Milwaukee factory service center to be analyzed. Batteries are then pro-rated and may not always be replaced totally free.
Firestorm/Black and Decker are for the hobby type projects and will not hold up under professional use. They are good for what they are designed for. If you don’t like DeWALT, the only other brand I would suggest is Bosch.
