There ARE some very special and expensive drills that can actually make square holes. It starts with a round bit and then a gear mechanism chisels out the corners to make the round hole square all built in one unit. The way MOST corners are made is with plain old hammer and chisel. There are special chisels which are called mortise chisels which are very long and thin to make the special holes used in mortise joints. When using a chisel, always go for a smaller amount of wood than a larger amount to avoid splitting the wood along the grain. You want the chisel to shave the wood, not split off chunks.
