What tools would I need to get started in WoodWorking?

Posted on November 29th, 2009 by admin

For power tools would I need a Miter Saw, a Circular Saw, and a Jigsaw? Also, does Bosch or DeWalt make better saws. And if Bosch or DeWalt don’t make good saws who does? I want to have a reasonably priced saw that works good, I sorta have a budget since im 15. Thanks!
lol, i wish i did have someone to help me.

Immediate needs: Orbital sander, cordless drill, jig saw, circular saw, good set of bits.

When you can afford them: Router, biscuit joiner, miter saw (go with the Bosch or a Hitachi), compressor/finish nailer/brad nailer, table saw, jointer, dust collection system.

Down the road: Second router, trim saw, second cordless, and upgrading any of the tools you have. Get a good book on making jigs and fixtures. These can save you a ton of time and effort if you do a project often. Don’t forget about all of the consumables (nails, screws, stain/paint/varnish, glue, etc.). Woodworking is a great hobby. Good luck to you.

Hammer, pry-bars to remove nails, they come in a variety sizes. Saws, hack saw, fine saw, rip saw, circular saws, jig saw…sandpaper, sander, all kinds of sand paper. ruler, tape measure, leveler…nails, screws…plains, pencils, note pad to scribble measurements. Book called, "Basics in woodworking," is a must have. Vice, clamps…I can have fun with you all day shopping for tools at a hardware store, but I guess anyone can have just as much fn helping you out. Have fun on your new adventure!

You didn’t say what type of woodworking you want to do.

You can build anything without power tools. You don’t need expensive miter saws, plate jointers, routers etc.

To get started you need the following hand tools: rip saw, crosscut saw, back saw, low angle block plane, smooth plane, jointer or jack plane ( and the stones to keep them sharp), cabinet (card) scraper, set of chisels, f-clamps, pipe clamps (you can never have too many clamps), screw drivers, and a corded drill (cheaper than cordless). There once was a pbs program call the "Woodright" and he did all his work with hand tools. Do a web search for working with hand tools (you tube has vids).

Catalogs to check for tools: Rockler, Lee Valley Tools, Woodcraft etc.

You can add to this as your experience and budget grows.

Budget wisely and don’t forget that quality wood is not cheap. Although, you can make some beautiful boxes etc out of old palettes and other found wood.

I have a fairly complete shop (there’s always one more tool I think I need) and still use hand tools regularly.

    Good luck.

PS: Your first project should be a sturdy workbench
